I certainly vote for more record shops. There is still a little record fair in Chelmsford every now and then. I pop in, and it really is the same people selling the same records as they did about 17 years ago when it all started drying up. Its like, nobody has told them that vinyl is dead, and they all turn up with their boxes of 70's rock and Queen lp's and drink tea and chat about Woodstock, and wonder why the chap in the corner selling cd's is so popular.
A funny thing happened at the last record fair I went to. Well, some history. In 1992 I discovered Spirit, and then later that year discovered that their music was not being released on CD (much of it now is) so dedicated my weekends to hunting for second hand Spirit records. I gathered a fair few over the years. By the time I left University in 1997 my collection was safe and record fairs were almost dead. Anyway, in Chelmsford a few months back there was a chap with a dirty box full of "rare hippy rock" or something. I took a peek, and he had about 10 Spirit albums, and they were selling for £20-40 each. Nuts. I already had them all. I realised that my hunt for Spirit in the 90's was a worthwhile act, as now I can hand my rare lp's down through the generations. If I get my record player working again....
What did the 90's mean for me? I started a job in banking, where I was enslaved for 12 years. I am now out, like Harry, thanks to the success of the Anti-Capitalist Revolution. All those demos must have worked. Those new age hippies really knew what they were doing didn't they?
