Harry

Now playing… Fionn Regan – The Shadow Of An Empire

me drumminHarry worked for a bank. Think of him as a 6Music-friendly Howard from the Halifax ads (you don’t hear much from him any more either…). He managed squillions of pounds worth of investments for clients, yet maintained his indie props out of hours by immersing himself in the heartfelt musings of American Music Club, the heads-down axe-thuggery of Hot Snakes, and the glorious jangle of The Sea Urchins, to name but a few.

He met Steve over twenty years ago at school in Bristol, where their friendship formed over a shared love of The Smiths and an annoying tendency to re-enact the previous night’s Fry & Laurie sketches in Chemistry lessons.

The corporate yin to Steve’s creative yang, Harry’s musical choices for the show proved that bankers can rock with the best of them, at least for two hours on a Sunday, after they’ve read the business pages.

Since the show ended in May, Harry has spent his time watching cricket, ordering obscure records on the internet, and scratching himself.

Here’s a comprehensive list of Harry’s musical picks on the Steve Show – it’ll give you an idea of the sort of stuff he likes…

Harry has been my source of new music for over a decade now. At Uni in 1994 he introduced me to Dodgy and Supergrass, then a few years later I was in need of new ideas and he suggested Mercury Rev, Belle and Sebastian, Elliot Smith, Air, Beta Band and Sparklehorse (1999). Now he finally has a place to tell the world about the music he has found, and I no longer need to send him emails. And the music is often on YouTube, so no need to even buy a CD. Do people still by CD’s? Or is it just vinyl now?

The Bitter Springs are utter genius and deserving of a much bigger audience. I’ll post something on the site soon to prove that fact. Thanks for getting in touch Simon – you have email. Cheers, Harry.
